Install the tool
Run the MSI installer, reopen Revit, and all 3 ribbon tabs appear.
1. Purpose
Puts the tool into the exact Revit build in use with one installer run, instead of hand-copying files into the add-ins folder. A one-time job — later releases just install over the top to upgrade.
2. Quick video (≤ 2 minutes)
[Video in production — follow the steps below for now.]
3. Steps
- Close Revit fully, then run the per-user installer (
VP_RevitAPI-<version>-SingleUser.msi) — it needs no admin rights. [image 01: the downloaded installer file] - On the welcome screen click Next; in the feature tree tick the Revit version(s) in use (2024, 2025...), then Install. There is no destination-folder choice — Revit only reads its own per-year add-ins folder, so the installer puts everything in the right place itself. - When done, reopen Revit: the VP_MEP, VP_LAYOUT, and VP_Manage tabs on the ribbon mean success. [image 03: the 3 tabs on the ribbon after install]
4. Real-world example
A fresh machine with Revit 2025 for plumbing work. Close Revit, run VP_RevitAPI-1.4.0-SingleUser.msi, tick only 2025, Install — reopen Revit and the VP_LAYOUT tab is there, ready to put views in sheet. Under five minutes, start to finish.
5. Common errors
| Symptom | Fix |
|---|---|
| Reopened Revit shows none of the 3 tabs | The installer wrote to the wrong Revit year — rerun it and tick the exact Revit year in use |
| Old version still sits next to the new | Builds with different upgrade codes install side by side — uninstall the old one in Control Panel, then reinstall the latest |
| Install fails halfway | Revit is locking files — close Revit fully (check Task Manager for leftover Revit processes), then reinstall |
